Being a writer is scary. I've always been writing. But I've never shared my work. At least not the work that mattered to me. The one written from the heart. In the last couple of weeks, I've slowly been putting out my feelers to some fellow writers out there to connect and I've noticed that so many of us feel the same way. So I decided to be brave and to reach out. And what better subject to connect over than boys?
For today, I was thinking about a quirk of mine, something uniquely me that I could share with you. And as I was sitting on my couch, looking around my living room, I noticed there might be something about my infatuation with certain fictional men that might be a bit extraordinary. Just maybe. What do you think?
I've always been exceptionally good at forming close relationships with book characters, movie characters, TV series characters or musicians. All of them are fictional. All of them are very big parts of my life.
As my current work in progress also contains a certain broody love interest character, I thought about what it was about these men, that stayed with me? What about my fictional boyfriends makes me fall in love with them?
When I think about the men I've always felt drawn to, I can put them in three categories:
- The protector
- The tortured soul
- The bad boy
Those types are not mutually exclusive. There are tortured soul types that also fulfill the role of a strong protector and bad boy and those are mostly the fictional men I fall head over heels for. Just a few examples on top of my head:
-
Spike (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)
Definitely the bad boy, but he falls in love with the Slayer and protects her fiercely. He has his own moral demons to battle and also fits in the tortured soul category.
3/3 -
Edward Cullen (Twilight)
In my defence, I was still young when I read Twilight. I probably wouldn't fall for him again if I read it today. He is a prototype tortured soul and very protective. No bad boy.
2/3 -
Dean Winchester (Supernatural)
Definitely a bad boy in the beginning. Fiercely protective of those he loves, protecting everybody with his life. His soul has literally been tortured in hell, so 3/3. -
Damon Salvatore (Vampire Diaries)
Prototype bad boy, protective of those he loves, although he tries to make no big deal out of it. Struggles with his own moral compass.
3/3
What about you? Do you have fictional boyfriends? Do you easily fall in love with fictional characters? I'd love to know if you have a certain type as well? Who are your fictional boyfriends?
